type

debris in shoulder

description

Northbound First Street, between Ray and Stanley, near the bridge, there's a lot of broken brown glass in the bike lane. (The "type" is misleading. This is a marked Class II bike lane, not a shoulder, but that was the closest match.)

Eastbound Bernal, approaching Sunol Blvd, there's an old illegal "Bikes Use Sidewalk" sign. The city has no authority to ban cyclists from this stretch of roadway. The sign should be removed.

description

Northbound Sunol Blvd. approaching Bernal, there's a raised asphalt sidewalk marked as a "bike lane". This is a violation of several basic Highway Design Manual requirements for bike lanes. For starters, it's on the wrong side of the right-turn lane, and it's at a different level from the rest of the roadway. Therefore, it fails the requirements of CVC 21207(b) and is not legally a bike lane.

description

Eastbound Koll Center Parkway (at fairgrounds gate 12) waiting to turn left onto Northbound Valley. Placed my wheel directly over the loop, but the light did not turn green for multiple cycles. I was just about to apply CVC 21800(d)(1) when a car came along behind me and triggered the green.

No pedestrian crosswalk or button, either, so many cyclists end up improvising an against-the-light dash across a highway intersection with rounded turning lanes. Very, very dangerous!

type

pothole or pavement cracks
hazardous drainage grate
insufficient shoulder width

description

This drainage grate has a dangerously wide section which could allow road bike tires to slip in, resulting in an auto accident. Please note also that both sides of Santa Rita Road (north and southbound) near Amador high school is in very poor overall condition for bicycles, which is of great concern for students and other riders. On the southbound side between Black Ave and the railroad tracks, the bike lane has many potholes and is very uneven due to poor patching after a trench was dug through the bike lane. On the northbound side, there is insufficient width for a bike lane yet the edge of concrete gutter juts up to a height of several inches, which could cause a bike rider to be thrown into the very close adjoining auto traffic. thank you James Van Dyke jvdleftcoaster@yahoo.com

The bike lane on Eastbound Ray closest to both First St and Valley is also marked to allow motor vehicles to park (within the bike lane, forcing bikes out into auto traffic). Near the Shell Station, the beginning of the bike lane almost always has a car parked in it, and then again in front of the LDS Church the lane again narrows yet the curb has not been painted red to keep cars out. Again, it's only the very end and beginning of the Ray St bike lane that needs to be marked as "no parking". thank you James Van Dyke jvdleftcoaster@yahoo.com
