High Wheel Race in Albany

highwheelHere’s an opportunity to enjoy some scortching by high-wheel riders and celebrate Albany’s Centennial this Sunday! As part of a full day of criterium racing sponsored by the Berkeley Bicycle Club and East Bay Velo Club, you will have an opportunity to see entertaining noon-time races. Highwheel, or penny farthing, bicycles predate the modern safety bicycle that became prevalent from the late 1880s onward.

Albany Traffic & Safety Commission Meeting re. Buchanan Street bikeway

The City of Albany is currently designing a project to complete the high-priority bikeway between the western end of the Marin Avenue bike lanes and the Buchanan overpass path to the Bay Trail. Three project options are under consideration, all of which pass through a USDA facility at the western end of the project area. The USDA is supporting study of two options, but has blocked study of the third option, which looks like the best for bicyclists, on the basis of homeland security.

Marin Ave bike lanes are being used, with increasing frequency, by motorcyclists. This activity is illegal (passing on the right as it were), however law enforcement is rare. The motorcyclists who use Marin bike lanes, mainly during rush hour, are a real safety hazard to bicyclists.
