Eleven East Bay Schools Ready to Build $5.7 Million in Safe Routes to School Projects

Eleven East Bay Schools Ready to Build $5.7 Million in Safe Routes to School Projects

We are happy to report that the California Department of Transportation has awarded 11 Safe Routes to School grants to schools in the East Bay. Is your kid’s school on the list below? A total of $5.7 million in funds have been awarded in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. These projects include new bikeways on Farm Bureau Rd in Concord, Canal Rd in Pittsburg and Blacow Rd in Fremont. Alameda County schools in particular did well to receive so many grants, which is a testimony to the great work of Transform, Cycles of Change, and our supportive local cities and their staff to get more kids walking and bicycling to school. Good habits start early! On Bike to School Day this past May, bicycling rates to many schools tripled, and the numbers are only growing. It’s is great to see cities working hard to keep up with this surging demand. It is also encouraging to know that thanks to our successful advocacy work, the regional Safe Routes to School Program is intact and fully funded for the next 4 years. We are also working to ensure that the State does not take any of these monies in the future for other roadway projects. Your help may be needed for this. Stay tuned.

Why Can't Alameda County Have a World-Class Bicycle Plan?

Alameda County is updating their Countywide Bicycle Plan and it needs a huge boost when it comes to setting goals for increasing bicycling in the county and for developing a robust implementation plan to achieve those goals. Comments on the Plan are due July 27, 2012 and your Bicycle Coalition is pushing to have the Plan significantly improved, even made ‘world-class.’ You can help.

Contact the Alameda County Transportation Commission (Alameda CTC) and let them know you want ‘Measurable Goals’ in the Countywide Bicycle Plan. We are asking for the Alameda CTC to set goals of:

Bike Counts up 27% Last Year; 75% in Last 10 Years

Alameda County’s first ever substantive evaluation of bike count data has been released and the numbers are super-encouraging. The Alameda CTC has conducted bike counts since 2002 at locations throughout the County, in order to see countywide trends in bicycling (and walking). Here are some highlights:

Tell the Story of Your Bikeway

We are busy planning for a major Fall campaign to gain voter approval for the reauthorization of the Alameda County Transportation Sales Tax and the billion dollars it includes for new bike/ped projects. What better way to do this than to learn more about those who are enjoying bike projects already funded by this transportation sales tax–you!
