Carquinez Scenic Drive along the cemetery in Martinez has pavement in bad condition and is potentially dangerous. UPDATE 11-20-14: Bike East Bay is trying to determine whose responsibility it is: CoCoCo or EBRPD. Will report back on results. UPDATE 12-1-14: Haven't heard back from Bike East Bay sources, so approaching City of Martinez, EBRPD & CoCoCo directly to determine jurisdiction. UPDATE 12-2-14: Turns out there are stretches that belong to Martinez, and some under CoCoCo jurisdiction. I've encouraged both to work together to repair concurrently. Final response from CoCoCo, though, was "Funding is always an issue." This just in from Martinez: "We were waiting to pave our portion of Carquinez Scenic Drive once the construction was completed. The street was used as a construction route. It should be repaved next year."

Major Cracks in Carquinez Strait Scenic Drive (Snake Road), Martinez (east of Alhambra Cemetery) have previously been reported. There are sections of road that abruptly end in steep cliffs due to landslides breaking the asphalt road off in chunks. This road is a very popular bike route and bicyclists have been injured in falls on the road. The road has not been repaired. It is VERY dangerous and needs immediate attention. Hope you can expedite repairs before someone else needs medical attention. Thank you. Please visit and vote for restoring Snake Road at http://www.washingtonwatch.com/bills/show/ED_45433.html

description

Coming down the hill from the cemeteries (Alhambra and Catholic) and heading east on Carquinez Scenic Dr. into Martinez before Talbart St. there are some long pavement cracks with the side toward the center of the road raised about an inch relative to the other side and the crack is aligned with the direction of travel. A bicycle wheel touching the edge of one of these cracks can easily cause loss of steering control and a crash. That happened to one of our club riders today on a group ride and resulted in his sustaining a head wound and being taken by ambulance to the ER (fortunately the injury does not appear to have been serious). And there was a similar incident earlier this year on another one of our club's (Valley Spokesmen) rides at the same location that also resulted in an injury and call for EMT assistance. One of the EMTs commented then that they had been called to this location quite a few times.
