Climate Ride 2011 Recap

For the first time this year the East Bay Bicycle Coalition has partnered with Climate Ride, the largest environmental cycling event in the county, for the second annual California Climate Ride. This year’s ride, in the first week of October, was an epic undertaking as we rode through several unseasonal storms on the 320 miles from Eureka to San Francisco. Despite the rain our team’s spirits stayed high.

This year the ride kicked off with a beautiful 61 mile ride heading out from Fortuna, just south of Eureka. The Climate Riders cruised through the Avenue of the Giants under sunny skies. One day two everyone woke up to pouring rain, which didn’t let up all day. Our riders made it over the grueling Leggett Hill drenched to the bone, as the organizers worked behind the scenes to find everyone dry accommodations for that night. The next day was our century day, with the option to shuttle at 66 miles, or ride all the way from Mendocino to Duncan Mills on the Russian River. Day 4 was a lovely ride through the Sonoma wine country with only a few showers.

Bridge the Bay Fundraiser a huge success

Bridge the Bay Fundraiser a huge success

EBBC Board Member Fast Freddie Rodriguez and
Executive Director Renee Rivera

This past rainy Thursday night the David Brower Center in Berkeley was filled with elected officials, bike racers, everyday cyclists, recreational riders, transportation consultants and people of all ages, mingling, enjoying good food and drink and competing for great deals on bikes, tours and bike art. Everyone had one thing in common and that is the vision of a Bay Bridge with a world-class bikeway the length of the bridge, connecting our East Bay communities with jobs and destinations in San Francisco.

The East Bay Bicycle Coalition would like to send out a great big bike-friendly Thank You to all who came out to our February 24th Bridge the Bay Fundraiser to build support for a continuous path on the Bay Bridge connecting Oakland and San Francisco.

We need your support to fuel the East Bay Bicycle Coalition’s advocacy work, making your ride better here in the East Bay. We are looking forward to a great year for bicycling in 2011. This past year, East Bay cities received over $50 million in funding commitments for new bike/ped improvements–it was a record year for us! Looking at it from an organization’s perspective, every dollar in membership support you gave us this year was returned 1,000 times in new bike projects. Not bad!

Make a Special Contribution to the Bicycle Coalition!

2011 is going to see many more new bike lanes striped, including Carlson Blvd and Barrett Avenue in Richmond, Buchanan Street in Albany the Ninth Street Connection between Emeryville and Berkeley, Webster and Franklin streets in downtown Oakland, 38th St in East Oakland, upper Broadway and Tunnel Road in the vicinity of the Caldecott Tunnel, San Leandro Blvd in San Leandro, Foothill Blvd in Pleasanton, and many more. Your support will bring projects like these to more East Bay cities. Thanks and ride safe into 2011!
