Help Bring a Cycle Track to Alameda’s Shoreline Drive

Thursday, June 28, 2012 - 7:00pm to 9:00pm

We need your help to create a safe and convenient bikeway along Shoreline Drive in Alameda. Many of our members enjoy bicycling down to the Robert W. Crown State Beach, or shopping by bike at the Shoreline Shopping Center, but high-speed traffic and no bike lanes make riding on Shoreline Drive dangerous and discourages walking and bicycling in an area that should be teaming with people. Our partners at Bike Alameda are taking on the issue!

There is a narrow, sandy pathway on the beachside of the road, but it’s better suited for joggers, pedestrians, and crabs than people on bicycles. The pathway jogs around light poles and when it is congested, it’s a danger for those trying to simply commute or enjoy the sights. There are also no good accommodations for getting on to or off of the pathway. The Alameda Public Works Department wants your input on a plan to remove one traffic lane in each direction in favor of adding a bike lane. Bike Alameda wants a cycle track installed, which is a much better design. Come to a public workshop to support this important bikeway project.
