More than 10 years ago, regional and local agencies identified a unique opportunity to create an extraordinary park at the base of the Bay Bridge East Span. Gateway Park will offer an exciting new way to experience the Bay and the new Bay Bridge East Span. Gateway Park will provide a unique Bay Trail destination and serve as a launch point for crossing the new Bay Bridge East Span from Oakland to Yerba Buena Island as part of a spectacular bicycle and pedestrian experience.

The planning process began with the first public workshop—held February 25, 2010—to identify goals and activities to take place in the park. In addition, hundreds of people completed our online survey to share their ideas and enthusiasm for Gateway Park. Suggestions to date include such varied ideas as museum and educational facilities telling the story of the bridge and transportation around the Bay, a model for Bay edge restoration and site sustainability, a configuration that links to nearby West Oakland and Emeryville and serves these neighborhoods’ needs, a new venue for festivals and concerts, a way to remember the old bridge, and much more.

With this community input, park concepts are now being explored. Entitled First Concepts: Design Ideas for Gateway Park, the workshop will be an opportunity to review initial park design concepts. Let us know if we are moving in the right direction as well as whether we overlooked something important to you. Tell us whether our conceptual plans fit the desired character of the park.

We hope that you will help us explore the many exciting possibilities that Gateway Park offers."
