Rodando en La Habana: Bicycle Stories (Film Screening)

Saturday, July 1, 2017 - 6:30pm to 9:00pm The Layover - Music Bar & Lounge 1517 Franklin St, Oakland

Rodando En La Habana - bicycle stories is a street-level story of contemporary Havana.

It’s been 20 years since the Special Period, when Cuba found itself suddenly without Soviet petroleum. Importing over 1 million Chinese bicycles helped save the island – what does bicycling mean to Cubans today? This indie work by a largely Habanero team premiered to a full house in the Festival of New Latin American Cinema. Awards include a Best Short Doc in the Mexico International Film Festival. Rodando has screened widely at festivals and other venues, including on Latin American TeleSur TV. Co-filmmaker Jennifer Ruth Hosek will attend to discuss bicycle stories and the situation of Cuba today.

Bonus screening of Forever Bicycle (15 min, 1997, Luis Deulofeu, Cuba), Cuban Spanish – no subs – international premiere.

Doors @ 6:30pm. Film screening @ 7:00pm.

21+ w/ valid I.D. $5-$15 sliding scale, no one turned away.
