Key Mtg for New Bike Traffic Signal Design at Hillegass/Ashby

Wednesday, March 19, 2014 - 7:00pm to 8:30pm

When: Wednesday March 19 at 7:00-8:30pm

Where: Willard Middle School in the Library, 2425 Stuart St, South Berkeley

The future of Berkeley’s bicycle boulevard network is at stake! Help us win support for a new bicycle traffic signal crossing at Hillegass & Ashby. Staff have watered down the original plan supported by many to provide a protected phase for bicycling on Hillegass across Ashby. Instead, because of pressure from a few neighbors, you will have to mix with turning cars as you cross Ashby.

As bad as this is, the broader plan in Berkeley is to replicate the original protected phase bike signal at other intersections of bicycle boulevards and busy arterials. Now, that sensible approach is in jeopardy. We need you March 19 to show support for a protected bicycle signal at Hillegass and Ashby.

Contact Transportation Manager Farid Javendel at Fjavendel@ci.berkeley.ca.us and cc Berkeley City Councilmember Kriss Worthington at kworthington@ci.berkeley.ca.us and let them know you deserve a protected phase for the new bike traffic signal. Thanks and see you March 19!

Some videos that illustrate how a HAWK Beacon would operate are shown in the following links:

·         https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x92c5SHc8yM

·         https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImgJKQxaZ20

Note these examples are slightly different then what we are proposing at Ashby/Hillegass, but the HAWK signal sequencing would be the same.
