Our second training ride will take past San Pablo Dam, through Pinole and Rodeo, and over the Carquinez Bridge, then crossing along the bay to Benicia, partly along our old friend the Bay Trail. After lunch in Benicia we'll cross the bridge on a bike lane that Alex Zuckerman and the EBBC fought for over a twenty-year period. Then we go through some industrial areas as we wend our way over to the North Concord BART station. Consider that last part an advocacy ride--asking the question: How could we make this route better for cyclists?
The route covers about 2,000 feet of climbing so this will be a considerable jump from your last training ride. Unfortunately, there are no easy early exits. If you think 42 miles is beyond your reach, consider doing the first 15 miles or so and then turning back. That would still be an increase from your first ride because of the hills.
As always, bring snacks, your helmet, good spirits, and money for BART and lunch. Or bring your own lunch if you're on a budget. On our pilot ride, Java Point Cafe was quite amenable to outside food.
This ride is open to whoever wishes to join us.Map and cue sheet for Carquinez-Benicia Bridges ride
