Bike East Bay seeks an enthusiastic Community Organizing Intern to strengthen our community partnerships in the lead up to Bike to Work Day (May 12). This individual will have the opportunity to build relationships with a diverse set of community partners, and will gain firsthand experience in grassroots organizing.

The Community Organizing Intern will support our Local Working Groups – affiliates of Bike East Bay who are embedded in communities around the East Bay and advocate for change on the local level. Availability to attend and support our Local Leader Summit on February 20 is desired. The Community Organizing Intern will continue to interface with these groups on local campaigns as well as on preparations for Bike to Work Day

Responsibilities include but are not limited to: participating in the Local Leader summit debrief and wrap-up process; coordinating monthly calls and rides as part of the Local Leader program and/or the Women Bike program; attending community meetings and reporting back; organizing a community event for Bike Month; engaging local bike shops around Bike to Work Day.

A strong candidate will come with the enthusiasm and motivation to reach out to community groups on behalf of Bike East Bay and establish new partnerships. A main goal of the internship is to build relationships with faith based groups, communities speaking languages other than English, and other local organizations. We seek an individual who can clearly communicate our mission and goals and find common ground with people of diverse backgrounds. Spanish or Chinese language skills are a plus.

The hours for this position are 8-12 hours a week from mid-February to the end of May. The position will report to Project Manager Cynthia Armour and work closely with Events Manager Dave Mann. Academic credit can be arranged by working with your academic institution’s internship program.

Requirements

  • Be a self-starter able to take initiative on individual projects, understand the goals, stay on task, and ensure successful completion
  • Strong writing and communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills, including task management, scheduling events/meetings, following up with partners and volunteers
  • Basic knowledge of the types of bicycle facilities found in cities of the East Bay and in other bike-friendly cities around the country
  • Ability to travel around to various cities in the East Bay by bike and transit
  • Outgoing, dynamic, and flexible personality
  • Strong oral communication skills and leadership skills—must speak clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations and demonstrate group presentation skills
  • Dependability—must arrive consistently at work and on time, follow instructions, and respond to directions in a prompt manner

Helpful

  • Previous grassroots work experience
  • Spanish, Chinese, or Tagalog language skills
  • Familiarity with the geography (actual and political) in the East Bay
  • Experience with Bike to Work Day
  • A flexible schedule
