Bike East Bay seeks an Advocacy Intern enthusiastic to expand our campaign capacity in the months leading up to Bike to Work Day. This individual will gain firsthand experience in grassroots organizing and field coordination of local bicycle advocacy efforts. Specific responsibilities include coordinating bikeway opening celebrations and pop-up protected bikeway demonstrations in May, organizing and promoting rides with elected officials on Bike to Work Day (May 9), and street-side outreach on priority campaigns. The position will report to our Advocacy Director Dave Campbell.
This internship requires commitment of 8 hours per week, and we seek a 10 week commitment starting March 11. Availability on Bike to Work Day (May 9) is necessary.
Role
- Help organize new bikeway opening celebrations
- Organize Pop-up Bikeway Demonstrations during Bike Month (May)
- Coordinate Bike to Work Day rides/activities involving elected officials
- Support local leaders with Bike to Work Day proclamations
- Prepare advocacy materials for Bike to Work Day energizer stations
- Streetside outreach activities leading up to Bike to Work Day
Our pop-up protected bikeway demonstrations provide community members with a first-hand experience of the possibilities of progressive bike infrastructure. Success in this role will require organizational skills, coordination with our partners in city government and at other non-profits, and confidence when speaking with community members visiting the pop-up bikeways.
A strong Advocacy Intern will demonstrate professionalism and organizational skills in coordinating a number of rides with elected officials on Bike to Work Day. The intern will act as a liaison with public officials, coordinate ride details, and promote rides through social media, website postings and press releases.
Skills and Knowledge to be Gained:
- Grassroots organizing and field coordination experience applicable to many different campaigns
- Experience working with city staff and elected officials on progressive bike infrastructure
- Experience working with a growing, effective non-profit organization that is part of a significant change taking place in America as more people for betters ways to commute
- Academic credit, by working with your academic institution’s internship program
Requirements:
- Confident and professional communication skills
- Strong organizing skills, including working with databases, task management, scheduling events/meetings, following up with partners and volunteers
- Attention to details organizing events and following up with volunteers
- Basic knowledge of various bicycle facilities found in the cities of the East Bay and in other bike-friendly cities around the country
- Ability to travel to various cities in the East Bay by bike and by transit
- Outgoing, dynamic, and flexible personality
Helpful:
- Social media experience
- Familiarity with the geography (actual and political) in the East Bay
- Experience with Bike to Work Day
Application Process
Interested applicants should submit a resume and letter of interest to Advocacy Director Dave Campbell by February 15 for a March 11 start date. Interns will work 8 hours per week for 10 weeks, and receive a stipend of $1,200.
