On Thursday June 22nd, the BART Board will debate making BART a sanctuary transit system through the Safe Transit Policy. We want to have as many folks as possible from Bike East Bay come voice their support for Safe Transit!
Quick summary of the policy:
“The Safe Transit Policy ensures that regardless of ethnic or national origin, gender, gender identity, race, religion, sexual orientation, or immigration status, riders can count on a safe and secure environment on BART. The policy will forbid BART from spending any of its own resources to enforce federal immigration law, and will prohibit BART police officers and other employees from questioning riders about immigration status.”
Location: 344 20th St in Oakland, 3rd Floor (Follow the signs for BART Board Room).
Time: 9am to 2pm or 3pm
Unfortunately, BART has not yet released the agenda for the meeting, so we’re unsure exactly when public comment for Safe Transit will be heard. Director Lateefah Simon (who is sponsoring the policy) is working on getting public comment moved as early as possible on the agenda to try and make it easier for the public to come out at a designated time.
At this point, we’re inviting folks to come around 9am. We’re hoping that having a large presence in the room will put pressure on the Board to hear public comment quickly.
Please respond to firstname.lastname@example.org if you’re able to come or if you have any questions!
