Orchard Ave Traffic Calming Project Community Meeting, Hayward

Where: Multi-Purpose Room at HUB Parent Resource Center, 24823 Soto Road, Hayward

When: 6 PM to 7:30 PM on Monday, January 22, 2024

The Orchard Avenue Traffic Calming Project spans 0.53 miles of Orchard Avenue between Mission Boulevard and Soto Road. This section of Orchard Avenue serves multiple neighborhoods, businesses, and schools. This project proposes traffic calming improvements to reduce speeding and cut through traffic. The project aims to identify and address community concerns and issues related to pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicular travel.

Please note that the proposed design solutions presented at the community meeting are still under evaluation and may be modified based on community feedback and suggestions.

Bike East Bay has concerns that this proposed project so far does not:

  • Add new traffic calming, and instead removes two existing raised intersections
  • Implement any part of Hayward’s 2020 bike/walk plan recommendation for a Class 2 painted bike lane on Orchard Ave from Mission Blvd to Solo Road
  • Suggest any safety improvements at the intersection of Orchard and Mission, where bicyclist Chris Pena was killed by a speeding hit-run driver in September 2023

We encourage meeting participants to raise these as priority needs for inclusion with this project intended to improve traffic safety.
