Funding for continued operation and expansion of the Berkeley BikeStation is in jeopardy. Two years ago, the city of Berkeley won grant funding for expansion of BikeStation parking in a street-level location, but has yet to fully commit funds for ongoing operating costs. City Council is scheduled to take up the matter at its Dec 8 meeting.
Due to severe space constraints on the BART concourse level, the Berkeley BikeStation has exceeded design capacity. With funding from BART and a Safe-Routes-to-Transit grant, an on-street location has been secured. Unfortunately, the city of Berkeley has not met its full funding obligations, which would pay for the on-going operating costs. Without a full-funding agreement, the Safe-Routes-to-Transit grant will be lost, as will the leased space. At its Dec 8 meeting, the City Council will receive status report of the project from staff. A large turnout of BikeStation supporters is needed to save this project. Please get there early and sign a speaker card.
