Bike East Bay is looking for a talented individual to join our team as a Community Organizer focusing specifically on making bike share and bicycling safe, fun and accessible for people of color and communities at risk of displacement. Bike share gives people the ability to rent a bike for short trips at a self-serve bike share station and return it to any other bike share station. The San Francisco system is planned to expand by Spring of 2017 to neighborhoods in Oakland, Berkeley and Emeryville. The mission of our Bike Share Equity Outreach Program is to reduce the barriers to accessing Bay Area Bike Share/Ford GoBike.
We recognize that quality transportation is a fundamental right for Bay Area residents. Our goal is to reduce barriers so that Bay Area Bike Share users proportionally represent the ethnicity, race and income levels of the East Bay communities, and for communities of color to recognize the system as a positive community amenity. We envision a future where bike share helps reduce household transportation costs, helps improve health outcomes, provides sustainable employment and works seamlessly with the Bay Area’s transit system.
This position is an opportunity to work with the Regional Bike Share Equity Outreach Program’s framework to create new narratives around just and accessible streets. Through the outreach program, we can raise awareness about bike share but also engage residents with the process, organize positive programming around bicycling, and help create opportunities for health and resilience.
Job Components
Bike East Bay, the bicycle advocacy organization serving Alameda and Contra Costa counties, seeks to hire a Community Organizer from April to September.
The ideal candidate will bring strong grassroots organizing skills, volunteer management abilities, and a love for interacting with diverse and engaged volunteers working to improve their communities.
This work will include co-managing a group of bike ambassadors, scheduling and participating in outreach events, organizing rides and cultivating relationships with our partners. The Community Organizer will report to the Advocacy Manager and be part the advocacy team. Bike East Bay works on a collaborative, team-based goal-setting and accountability structure.
Responsibilities may include, but will not be limited to:
- Organize urban confidence and unity rides
- Assist in promoting the equity program
- Attend a training program
- Coordinate outreach team efforts: scheduling events, assigning shifts, collecting feedback, etc.
- Represent Bike East Bay at community meetings
- Creating new relationships and deepening existing relationships with community partners;
- Facilitating and leading team meetings, trainings and other activities;
- Maintaining good records of work activities;
- Engaging and communicating with members and volunteers about our work at all steps in the campaign process.
The ideal candidate will have a combination of qualifications that pulls from, but is not necessarily comprehensive of or limited to, this list:
- Commitment to Bike East Bay’s mission;
- Strong Oakland or Berkeley network;
- One to two years of experience as a local organizer;
- Charisma, energy and enthusiasm;
- Experience working as part of a hands-on marketing team or street team outreach;
- Written and/or conversational fluency in Spanish;
- Strong interpersonal and relational skills, including an ability to listen and empathize with neighborhood residents and local stakeholders;
- Experience working with communities of color and/or low‐income communities and commitment to community empowerment;
- An ability to take initiative and lead;
- Experience in event planning and base-building;
- An ability to work individually and as part of a team;
- Excellent verbal communication skills with a wide variety of audiences;
- Previous grassroots work experience; and
- Familiarity with the geography of the East Bay.
Compensation, Hours & Benefits:
The salary for this temporary employee position is $22 to $25 per hour. Schedule will be part time (20 hours a week) in April and May, and near-full time (35 hours a week) from June to September. Hours may be flexible, with significant work on weeknights and weekends in order to attend community meetings and events. Employees are eligible for pro-rated benefits after two months of work.

Bike East Bay (formerly the East Bay Bicycle Coalition) was established in 1972 to promote the interests of bicyclists in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. Our mission is to build healthy, sustainable communities by making bicycling safe, fun and accessible. In addition to advocating for better bicycling conditions, Bike East Bay also coordinates Bike to Work Day and has a successful bicycle safety education program offering free classes, a women bike program with rides and social events, and a local leader program that encourages more residents from more East Bay cities to become active and engaged.
