Women Bike Book Club

Registration is closed for this event
Everyone is invited to discuss biking, feminism, and the intersection of the two.

In partnership with Bike East Bay, the Oakland Public Library is co-hosting the Women Bike Book Club in 2017! Bike East Bay's Women Bike program is in its second year of bringing women and gender nonconforming folks together in social settings to share experiences and resources with each other.

Everyone is invited to discuss biking, feminism, and the intersection of the two, even if you run out of time to read the book. Join us on the second Thursday of each month at 6:00pm. You're welcome to bring your bike inside.

For October, we're thrilled to welcome local author Emily June Street! We will be reading her steampunk cycling novel, The Velocipede Races. (Request it through LINK+ here.) From the author's website

Cutthroat volocipede racing enthralls the citizens of Seren, and Emmeline Escot was born to ride. There's only one problem: she's a girl. Serenias -- the high-born women of the city -- live tightly laced lives, cloistered by their families before marriage, rigidly controlled by their husbands after.

Emmeline watches her twin brother gain success as a professional racing jockey while her own life grows increasingly narrow. Yet her hunger to ride never dies. Ever more stifled by the rules of her life, Emmeline rebels -- with stunning consequences.

Can her dream to race survive scandal, scrutiny, and heartbreak?

We can't wait to discuss this story and its inspiration with Emily June on October 12 at the Golden Gate Library.

Upcoming meetings of the Women Bike Book Club: November 9, and December 14 at the Golden Gate Branch (5606 San Pablo Ave).

October 12th, 2017 6:00 PM   through   7:30 PM
