Everyone is invited to discuss biking, feminism, and the intersection of the two.

In partnership with Bike East Bay, the Oakland Public Library is co-hosting the Women Bike Book Club in 2017! Bike East Bay's Women Bike program enters its second year of bringing women and gender nonconforming folks together in social settings to share experiences and resources with each other.

Everyone is invited to discuss biking, feminism, and the intersection of the two, even if you run out of time to read the book. Join us on the second Thursday of each month at 6:00pm. This is after-hours for the library, so we'll let people in periodically at the front door. You're welcome to bring your bike inside.

March is Women's History Month!

Much has been written about the role of the bicycle in women's liberation. Let's celebrate by reading the memoir from activist, suffragist, and bike rider, Frances Willard. As the head of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, Willard expanded the role of the organization into a broader women's rights movement. Taking up biking in her 50's, her memoir Wheel Within a Wheel: How I Learned to Ride a Bicycle was published in 1895. It is her ode to the spirit of liberation and independence that biking provides, as she believed that mastering bike riding can aid women in mastery in the "wider world."

You can access the book here on the Internet Archive, or ask for a book club copy at the Rockridge or Main Library reference desk after February 22.

Save the date(s) for upcoming meetings of the Women Bike Book Club: April 13 & June 8 at the Main Library; July 13, August 10 and September 14 at the Golden Gate Branch. Our May 11 meeting falls on Bike to Work Day! Meet us at Latham Square, where we will be taking part in Bike Happy Hour.

Stay tuned for future titles, and locations for the end of 2017!
