EBBC and Alameda PD will be providing free, monthly bike safety opportunities for adults and youth. Starting in December 2012, the EBBC and City of Alameda PD are excited to start offering a monthly “Bicycle Traffic School” series of adult bike safety classes. These two hour classes are free of charge and open to the general public, but are also being made available as a resource to any adult cyclist who receives a moving violation ticket from the City of Alameda Police. Attending a class and receiving a signed certificate within 30 days of the violation will enable the cyclist to pay a reduced fine of $50, as opposed to the original ticket fees which can often be in excess of $200. Officers will also be rewarding middle and high school kids who are riding independently and showing safe cycling skills with a “Tucker’s Token” for a free ice cream cone at Tucker’s Ice Cream on Park Street. When an on-duty traffic officer spots a minor following the rules of the road such as wearing a helmet, stopping at stop signs and red lights and using hand signals before turning, the officer will present them with a wooden token which can be exchanged at Tucker’s for free ice cream.
