When: Tuesday, January 25, 7 to 9 PM

Where: Point Richmond Community Center, 139 Washington Street in Richmond.

Come to this community workshop and share your ideas regarding the proposed Bay Trail connection between Castro Street and the existing trail under the Richmond/San Rafael Bridge. The Bay Trail connection to Point Molate is a planned multi-use trail that will provide non-motorized access from Richmond to Point Molate.

The Trail will close a roughly one-mile gap in the San Francisco Bay Trail with a planned future connection to Marin County. The goal of the project is to provide an off-street trail that is safe, continuous and accessible for pedestrians and bicyclists. The current route along surface streets and Interstate 580 shoulders does not provide a safe route for bicycles and does not accommodate pedestrians. This workshop is occurring at the beginning of the planning process and your involvement is encouraged.

Three alternatives are being considered and they are explained in the pdf below. The “Hybrid” Option is the one that is considered most promising and consultants are looking at ways to reduce its cost. The Richmond Bicycle & Pedestrian Advisory Committee reviewed the designs at its December meeting.

History of the Project:

  • 2001 feasibility study concluded trail should be located south of I-580 above retaining walls on Chevron property and Caltrans ROW.
  • City of Richmond, ABAG-Bay Trail, Caltrans and Chevron met several times in 2007-08 and informally recommended above option.
  • MTC completed a study related to the San Rafael Bridge Retrofit project, exploring options for bicycle travel.
  • Pt. Molate/Pt. San Pablo peninsula plans include pedestrian and bicycle facilities linked to Richmond area via design study trail.
  • Caltrans planning to replace section of I-580 (Scofield Deck), temporarily restricting bicycle access to Pt. Molate. Interim shuttle service considered during retrofit work.

Three Alternatives under consideration.
