This summer, 1,400 new bikes will populate Oakland, Berkeley and Emeryville as part of Ford GoBike’s bid to build one of the largest regional bike share networks in the United States.
A bike share bike is…
- A bike you can use without worrying about buying one, locking it up, or fixing flats
- A bike you pick up at one location and drop off at any other station
- A new, easy way to connect to downtown, BART or buses
- A fun and healthy way to get around.

Bike East Bay is advocating for a system that will serve all residents of the East Bay regardless of race, gender, class, or income. We’ve partnered up with TransForm to do education around what bike share is and how to use it, as well as to facilitate access for anyone who might be interested in joining. Our common goal is to create a bike share system that communities identify with ownership and empowerment.
Bike East Bay has worked extensively with Bay Area Bike Share and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission to make the system accessible to low-income residents by providing reduced price memberships, ensuring the station locations make them available to all, and alternatives to paying by credit card. However our work is far from down and there still exist many barriers to bike share in the east bay being equitably serving everyone.
