Nothing like a good competition between Berkeley and Oakland for the most new bike lanes and bike racks. Oakland has over 50 miles of new bikeways planned in the next 18 months and Berkeley is busy building 4 safe routes to school projects, 2 safe routes to transit projects, installing another 200 bike parking spaces, updating it’s bike parking ordinance, and readying a complete overhaul of it’s Bicycle Master Plan for 2013. Here’s the latest for both cities vying for the title of most bike-friendly:
- New bike lanes are down on MacArthur Blvd, between Broadway and Telegraph (photo upper left);
- New bike bridge in place at Lake Merrit Blvd as part of Measure DD and will be open to traffic soon;
- On-street bike parking corral at the new Memorial Stadium at Cal (upper middle in photo);
- New bike lanes on Gayley Road along the east side of Cal campus (upper right in photo);
- Preview of buffered bike lanes on Tunnel Road in Berkeley (lower left). Full bike lanes coming next year on Tunnel Road;
- New on-street bike parking coral on Solano Ave at Colusa, next to Peet’s Coffee (lower right in photo):
Many more bike projects coming in 2013 in both Berkeley and Oakland. Stay tuned and in the meantime enjoy the new bike facilites! Complete update on new bike facilities in Berkeley
