Bike for Bart
In honor of our friend and founding member Bart, we’re raising money to support Bike East Bay and their work to create safe, connected streets for all.
We ride bikes, and it is with our love of cycling in mind that Antonio and Geoff are writing about the value to us of Bike East Bay (BEB) and an idea to honor our founder, Bart Borland.
Early this year Geoff joined the BEB board and has learned the multitude of ways BEB supports our hobby. And, in the last few months we met with our Friday ride’s eponym, Bart Borland, who is doing well in his 85th year.
We discussed with Bart a potential fund-raising effort in his honor. He wholeheartedly approved of this effort to support BEB and looks forward to an interview with the BEB staff so they can highlight his early and long support of biking in the East Bay.
Following our fundraising efforts, BEB will feature Bart and our Friday ride in their on-line newsletter which reaches more than 22,000 people throughout the East Bay, and maybe we can get a similar article about Bart into at least one other local publication. He was a pioneer of East Bay biking and was an early influencer for many cyclists in our community.
Our contributions are about recognition of our ride and as a way to honor Bart Borland. The money supports Bike East Bay’s work to transform major car thoroughfares into community-oriented streets. Their work does more to leverage public highway funds for the benefit of cyclists than anything we could ever do without BEB. They are a cyclist’s voice for bridge access, safe cycling infrastructure and government attentiveness to pothole repair, just to name some of their pro-cycling work.
