Bay Trail Still Faces Roadblocks

Author: bcomadmin

Date: February 4, 2010

“The Bay Trail needs to be treated as a transportation facility,” said Robert Raburn of the East Bay Bicycle Coalition. “If it’s not going to be treated as a serious transportation facility, then I’m going to have to turn my back on it and say, ‘Look, we’re going to go after getting bike lanes on the street.”

Completed section of Bay Trail that is now closedRead the entire article published by the East Bay Express about the barrier posed by Hansen Aggregate to extending the Bay Trail along the Oakland estuary shoreline near High Street at Tidewater Avenue. The proposal to extend the path under a conveyor next to the dock is feasible.

YOU CAN contact your Oakland Councilmembers to let them know you support the path extension.

Please don’t confuse the above barrier with the unfair closure of a completed section of Bay Trail path. Also near Tidewater Ave, the East Bay Regional Park District (EBRPD) has closed a crucial regional commuter route to the Coliseum and Edgewater Business Park for construction work on a nearby aquatic center. As discussed in an article published in the Oakland Tribune by Cecily Burt, no safe detour is available for bicyclists. Nobody would ever propose a lengthy closure on a road for motorists!

YOU CAN help us reopen the existing Bay Trail path by contacting your elected EBRPD Board of Directors. Remind them that the Bay Trail is part of the regional bikeway network funded by State, regional and local transportation dollars.
