On Sat July 25th 2009 bicycle riders from all over the Bay Area came together under the banner of Bikes 4 Life and rode in unity thru the streets of Oakland (critical mass w youth of color). The theme of the ride was “healin from killin” This was such a beautiful event to be apart of and shows how united we all can be. We still have a long way to go and learn but the looks on peoples faces said it all. Bike riding is fun, and in a group is even more fun! B4L prides its efforts involving and exposing youth of color to the joys of biking and utilizing it as a resource to build more unity across different neighborhoods.
Following the ride there was a huge celebration at De Fremery Park where performers and dancers performed on a big stage for the large crowds of people there to see the riders arrive back from Lake Merritt. As the riders arrived you heard all types of cheers… The looks of pride and enjoyment all for the reason of bikes was such a good feeling to witness.
