Bikeshare in the East Bay

Tired of traffic and transit woes? Looking for a fun, healthy, and eco-friendly way to get around? Life is easier with bikeshare!

Hop on a bike and go!

Discover Oakland, Berkeley, & Emeryville, one ride at a time. Lyft and Bay Wheels operate our regional bikeshare system, which is always expanding!

There are over 120 docking stations in the East Bay, located across Oakland, Berkeley and Emeryville. (And hundreds more in San Francisco and San Jose!)

Bikes need to be rented and returned at the docking stations, so ride within the service area. You can find a list of locations on the Bay Wheels or Lyft apps, or on this bikeshare map.

Bay Wheels gives you two great options for getting around:

1. Classic Bikes: Use pedal power to zip around town without any fuss.
2. Electric-Assist Bikes (E-Bikes): These bikes give you a motorized boost while you pedal, making those Bay Area hills a breeze!

  • Single rides cost $3.99 for 30 minutes (and then $0.30/min onwards if you ride longer).
  • A Day Pass is $15, and you get unlimited 30 minute rides (additional costs if you ride longer, or rent an ebike)
  • A Month Pass is $29/month, and you get unlimited 45 minute rides (additional, but reduced costs if you ride longer, or rent an ebike)
  • An annual Bay Wheels Membership is $150/year, and you get unlimited 45 minute rides (additional, but reduced costs if you ride longer, or rent an ebike)

Yes. You can use the Lyft or Bay Wheels apps to rent a bike. Once you’ve set up your account, all you need to do is scan the bike’s QR code to start your ride.

Riding a bike is a safe and healthy way to get around. Bikeshare bikes are built to be sturdy, stable and comfortable. We encourage wearing a helmet whenever possible, planning your route ahead of time, and remaining visible and predictable.

If you want to build your biking confidence, join us for a free bike education class! We teach practical tips, review rules of the road, and practice riding in relaxed settings. We often host bikeshare-specific classes, too!

Bikeshare for All - Program for low-income Residents

At Bike East Bay, we believe that everyone should have access to safe and affordable transportation. That’s why we’re proud to support the “Bikeshare for All” program, which offers deeply discounted Bay Wheels memberships to residents who qualify for Cal Fresh, SFMTA Lifeline Pass, or PG&E Care.

The program offers a first-year membership for only $5, with subsequent monthly payments of $5. Members get free unlocks and extended ride times, making it a great option for daily commutes and errands.

City-specific Programs

Oakland

If you’re an Oakland resident 18 or older and curious about life with an e-bike, the city just launched a lending program which aims to be as accessible as possible.

You can rent an e-bike for four-weeks, with a rental fee of $120 (or just $20 for low-income residents). Please note that you will need to pay a refundable $500 deposit, and have a safe, indoor place to store and charge the bike!

Richmond

Richmond relaunched their bikeshare program in 2024, in partnership with Today. Their fleet of 40 e-bikes spans 7 stations, and operates Mon-Fri (8am-6pm) and Sat-Sun (12pm-6pm).

There’s a free voucher program for eligible Richmond residents, students and workers.

Why isn’t there bikeshare in my city?

We know that not every city has its own bikeshare program yet, but we’re dedicated to continued advocacy with local officials, community groups, and transit agencies to make bikeshare a reality across the entire region. Join us as we push for a fully connected, bike-friendly East Bay!

Many local bike shops rent bicycles: check out a list of our favorite East Bay shops on this map.
