pothole or pavement cracks
railroad tracks at oblique angle
Yesterday my wife Carla Fujikawa broke her leg riding her bike to work on Bike to Work Day. She was riding in Berkeley, northbound on 2nd Street just north of Hearst Avenue. She works at Kaiser Permanente's Regional Lab just a block north at 2nd and Virginia Street. She fell crossing the railroad tracks which crisscross this intersection north of Hearst. The pavement is very poor and rutted in addition to the track hazard. This accident happened at 5:45 AM. Fortunately Kaiser had a Bike to Work recharging station within a block of the accident, so Carla hobbled over to Betty, the Kaiser safety officer and got a Bike to Work bag and a place to sit while waiting for a ride to Kaiser Oakland. She'll be off work for at least 6 weeks... Thank you, David Fujikawa.
